Japan World Heritage Tour

A Japan tour of designated World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Visit Kyoto’s 1200 years of history and culture in such places as Nijo Castle, a former Tokugawa era shogun’s residence; and the gold leaf covered Golden Pavilion. You’ll stay in Takayama, known as “Little Kyoto” and see the preserved historical structures and environment. You’ll mingle with the locals at the historical thatched roofed village of Shirakawa-go. A visit to Kenroku Garden, one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. The tour also visits Hiroshima and the Peace Memorial Park. You will cruise Lake Hakone enroute to visit Mt. Fuji before proceeding to Tokyo.

Day 01 – Depart Home
Depart Canada for Kyoto via Tokyo.

Day 02 – Arrive Tokyo
Arrive into Kyoto in the late afternoon. Transfer to New Miyako Hotel.

Day 03 – Kyoto
Full day sightseeing of Kyoto, visiting Kinkakuji Temple, the most authentic and exquisite Japanese style garden in the world and home to the gold leaf covered Golden Pavilion; visit Ryoanji Temple and Nijo-jo Castle, former Tokugawa era shogun’s residence and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After lunch we will walk through Philosopher’s path and also see the cliff top Kiyomizu-dera temple which has a panoramic view of Kyoto city. Overnight New Miyako Hotel. (B,L)

Day 04 – Kyoto
After breakfast we will travel by train to Hiroshima. A bustling, affluent and extremely prosperous city in south Japan, Hiroshima stands proudly on the western side of Honshu island, in the Chugoku area. Hiroshima is most famous for its devastating atomic bomb attack in 1945, and whilst this will always be a prominent memory, Hiroshima quickly bounced back. Today, we will spend some time at Peace Memorial Park & Museum before having lunch. Next, we will visit Miyajima the “Shrine Island” famous for the Itsukushima Shrine. With its famed floating torii gate and corridor with beautiful vermillion hand rails that stretch into the calm Inland Sea, it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back to the train station to transfer back to Kyoto. Overnight New Miyako Hotel. (B,L)

Day 05 – Kyoto
Day free to explore Kyoto or consider visiting Nara, located less than one hour from Kyoto, due to its past as the first permanent capital, it remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan’s oldest and largest temple. Overnight New Miyako Hotel. (B)

Day 06 – Kanazawa/Shirakawago/Takayama
This morning travel by train to Kanazawa, followed by a visit to the Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s three most beautiful traditional gardens. After lunch drive by the scenic Lake Miboro and along Shokawa River to Shirakawago, designated in 1995 as part of the World Heritage Site. Its highlights are unique structures called Gassho-Zukuri, old traditional farm houses with steep thatched roofs resembling the hands of Buddhist monks in prayer. The roofs, made without nails, provide a large attic space used for cultivating silkworms. Transfer by coach to Takayama, a city in the mountainous Hida region that has retained a traditional touch, especially in the beautifully preserved Old Town. Overnight Best Western Takayama. (B,L)

Day 07 – Takayama
Morning walking tour in Takayama with an English speaking guide. A visit to the morning market, Jinya, and Yatai Kaikan Hall where colorful decorated traditional festival floats are displayed. This afternoon is free to explore this beautifully preserved old town. Overnight in Takayama. Overnight Best Western Takayama. (B)

Day 08 – Takayama/Hakone
Proceed to train station for our travel day to Hakone where we will see the Owakudani Boiling Valley as well as the Hakone Ropeway before we take a cruise on beautiful Lake Ashi. Overnight Resorpia Hakone Hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 09 – Hakone/Tokyo
This morning depart for Mt. Fuji via the expressway up Japan’s highest mountain to enjoy a spectacular view. Proceed to Tokyo with accommodations at Royal Park Shiodome Tower. (B,L)

Day 10 – Tokyo/Nikko
Full day tour to Nikko, visiting Nikko Toshogu Shrine via the Irohazaka zigzag highway up to the |mountains. Japanese style lunch, visit Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Waterfall. Return to Tokyo. Overnight Royal Park Shiodome Tower. (B,L)

Day 11 – Tokyo
Morning half day city tour of Tokyo, including a visit to the Tokyo Tower. On our way to Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s few districts, which have preserved a certain atmosphere of the old Tokyo, we will pass the Imperial Palace and National Diet Building. On our way back to the hotel we will drive by Akihabara and Ginza, famous for electrical devices and fine shops. Enjoy a free afternoon. Royal Park Shiodome Tower. (B)

Day 12 – Tokyo
Transfer to Narita airport for our flights home. (B)
